365 days post-wedding

As this post goes up, we are in Lake Como on holiday – a summer break with an anniversary celebration thrown in. I mentioned before that we technically had two weddings, one legal in London and the other “main” one in the South of France.

Not everything was what one might expect a wedding to have or to be, and I thought with so much wedding talk going on around me (two of my best friends are engaged, friends of friends are engaged, I’ll have attended 3 weddings by the end of the year – I’m literally surrounded), I would mention a few things that we did which possibly broke tradition – because it’s ok to do it your way!

– E and I did a very relaxed “first look”, the moment he saw me in my dress for the first time. Our bridesmaids and groomsmen were all there on the lawn together, the guys were teasing E as us girls came out and kept him from turning around too early, and it was all so nice and fun but also incredibly special. We walked down the aisle together, but even if we hadn’t I would have chosen to do a first look – it made the moment very exciting but intimate, and it also meant we could do photos of us and the bridal party before the ceremony, so we could spend all our time with the guests during the reception, which everyone seemed to appreciate.

– We wrote our own vows. It was a very… naked feeling, putting into words in front of everyone just how much committing to E means to me, but we are so glad that we did it and we promised each other to repeat those vows every anniversary.

– Each of E’s best men (or groomsmen, but they were all best men) made speeches, as well as my four bridesmaids. I know that having the best man’s speech is very traditional, but it was absolutely amazing to have speeches from each of our closest friends. There was nothing too incriminating and just the right touch of humour! If you’re a bride to be, think about asking your bridesmaids to make speeches – you might love it. I didn’t ask them to and they told me it was a very last minute decision, but I couldn’t be happier that they did!

– We didn’t have a wedding cake. Instead, we had the most epic dessert buffet ever (seen at the end of this post). I was so full and still too high on adrenaline (and champagne…) to eat too much of it (I had eaten a lot prior, don’t worry), but people still rave about the food we had and I can’t argue. It was spectacular.

All that being said, of course that’s only the beginning – marriage is the fun part.

I’m not ready to write a book on How To Be A Wife just yet, and probably never will. But if this past year is anything to go by, today we’re celebrating the best decision we’ve ever made.

Wait – you didn’t think I would pass up the chance to reminisce over our wedding photos did you? These were all taken by the wonderful Rémi Dupac

– if you’re having a wedding in France (or even elsewhere, he’s completely worth flying over), he’s your guy.

I love how personal your wedding was and how you did things your own way. So many people lose their personality a bit in weddings that are too forced full of traditions. You looked so gorgeous, the dress is perfect!xx

Congratulations both! You look absolutely gorgeous and your dress is stunning! SO beautiful and elegant. I love that you did things a little differently, and the 'first look' thing is really sweet. I think I would really like to do that if/when I get married and get some photos of the groom's reaction. And a wedding in the south of France… wow. Just perfect.N

I'm sorry that this is so late, but congratulations my dear! I've thought about whether or not I'd write my own wedding vows…I feel like I'd feel very naked too because I'm not good at talking about my feelings out in the open like that haha. But maybe you've inspired me ;] I LOVE your wedding pictures, your photographer really did an incredible job. The venue is absolutely stunning and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the picture of you putting on makeup in the window and the one below it. And the one of you and E in the field…so so cute! And the dessert bar does look fantastic!
